Notes:

Dated by comparison of butterfly signature, writing and paper with other menus, such as #06935. Whistler bought sole from John S. Charles (fl. 1876-1887), fishmonger in Pimlico, London [more], on 31 October 1877 (#08848).

2.  Filets
The menu, written in French, consisted of of filets of sole 'maitre d'hotel', chicken fricasée (literally, a medley), salt-meadow mutton, pancakes and coffee.

3.  Mr Elden - Miss Franklin
These are presumably the names of those present: Matthew Robinson Elden (1839-1885), artist [more], and Mary Maud Franklin (1857- ca 1941), JW's model and mistress [more].
