The date, suggested by writing and butterfly signature, is confirmed by JW's purchases of oysters and sole from John S. Charles (fl. 1876-1887), fishmonger in Pimlico, London [more], on 23 November 1877 (#08849).
The menu, written in French, consisted of oyster soup, fried sole, braised beef, roast pigeons, mince pies, stewed pears and coffee.
