Notes:
1. 1 February [1877?]
Comparison with other butterfly signatures could indicate an earlier date, possibly as early as 1875. JW's account with John S. Charles (fl. 1876-1887), fishmonger in Pimlico, London [more], affirms that on 1 February 1877 Whistler bought oysters but no sole, and, on 1 February 1878, sole but no oysters (#08848).
2. ADS
Written in ink on laid paper with partial watermark 'ORIGINAL / TURKEY MILL / KENT'.
3. Potage
The menu, written in French, consisted of American oyster soup, fried sole, mutton with small turnips and cream sauce, pancakes, and coffee.
