Sir

Mr Whistler has been ill so long that he has not been able to write you respecting the picture of a woman which he redeemed from you through Mr Addams[4]. He is now better and he has requested us to communicate with you at once. You state in your receipt that it is a picture which Mr Whistler had sold to Mr Leopold Stevens[5] and that the latter had sold it to Mr Georges Petit[6]

This is absolutely incorrect

Please understand therefore that Mr Whistler never sold this painting to Mr Leopold Stevens or anybody, and he never sold any other painting to Mr Stevens, nor had any transaction with him relating to this picture and nobody knows this better than Mr Leopold Stevens himself

We are Gentlemen
Yours Obedt Servants
