TO E. W. Godwin Eq

Dr Sir

Whistler

We enclose a copy of a letter we have received from the Solicitors of the Metropolitan Board of Works - - You told us in the first instance that yr plans had been approved by the Boards Architect[3] & on the strength of that [we?] have been advancing - Let us see you at once & have this matter put right because as a matter of course we stop the funds & there will be a catastrophe

Yours

G & W Webb

Notes:

1.  George and William Webb
JW's lawyers.

2.  Edward William Godwin
JW's new house and studio, the White House in Tite Street, was designed by Edward William Godwin (1833-1886), architect and designer [more].

3.  Boards Architect
George John Vulliamy (1817-1886), Superintending Architect with the Metropolitan Board of Works, London [more]. The Metropolitan Board of Works were slow in giving JW planning permission for his new house, the White House on Tite Street, and withheld the lease until alterations were made to the facade.
