11 Sept 1894 -
Dear Mr Whistler,
The lithographs are simply superb in quality & it will be certainly a long day before the followers will even have the heart to try to limp behind in that direction.
But all the same my previous opinion still remains to this extent at the least [p. 2] that I wish you would do some etching.
Herewith is the cheque for £37/-/- as per your note. We are all certain - I mean the vendeurs dans le galerie[2] - that the price is fatal even for the faithful. When at £2. 2/- we found the market 'presque impossible[3]' it cannot be better at double the sum! However we shall try & I think of having a little show of "Mr Whistlers New Lithographs" & frame up about a dozen & call special attention to them -
Some of these new ones we like better than others. I suppose we can obtain more [p. 3] copies? Please send us one of each of new ones as you do them & then we can order more of those we want.
Many thanks for your note to the American[4]. But in future you should say that people wanting verification & note must buy at least some of the lithos or something to make up to you for the trouble
Yours vy truly
