Received from Mr Addams the sum of Eight thousand five hundred Francs for the retrocession of a painting by Whistler – The portrait of a woman, that he had sold to Mr Léopold Stévens and that the latter had sold to Mr Georges Petit

Rose et or: La Napolitaine (YMSM 505). The sitter was Carmen Rossi, model, proprietess of the Académie Carmen [more]. JW suspected her of stealing paintings from his Paris studio. One of them was La Napolitaine. Addams helped out with the investigations (see C. Addams to JW, #00110, #00112; JW to C. Addams, #00113; I. Addams to JW, #00119 and R. B. Philip to C. Addams, #04837).
