The Whistlers collected mainly 18th century silver, much of which is now in the Hunterian Art Gallery. Beatrix Whistler was also collecting, designing, and wearing jewellery. It is possible the pearls were for a ring designed by her, which is now in the Hunterian Art Gallery (see MacDonald, Margaret F., Beatrice Whistler Artist and Designer, Glasgow, 1997).
