The two pastels were bought by me from the Fine Art Socy and formed part of a special exhibition of Mr Whistler's Venetian pastels made after his return from Venice. They were bought in the room of the exhibition soon after it opened, and were sent straight from the exhibition to my house. They have never been out of my keeping for a single hour, and I think Mr Whistler must be mistaken in thinking that parts of [p. 2] the pastel are not by him[.] The Fine Art Society will no doubt corroborate this statement.

Venice (M.824). The second pastel has not been clearly identified (see Venice (M.824)). JW had commented to Thomson that the pastel was not one that had been exhibited at the F. A. S. and that it had been 'touched up by somebody else' (#08244). Muir argued the exact opposite. See also D. C. Thomson to JW, #05782, #05785; JW to Thomson, #08243, #08252.
