Notes:

1.  [January 1879]
On 1 January 1879 J. A. Rose, using an earlier version of this form, subscribed for the engraving (Rose to C. A. Howell, #11902).

2.  Charles Augustus Howell
Charles Augustus ('Owl') Howell (1840? - d.1890), entrepreneur [more].

3.  ARRANGEMENT IN GREY AND BLACK,
After the Whistler v. Ruskin trial, A. Graves was arranging for the exhibition of Arrangement in Grey and Black: Portrait of the Painter's Mother (YMSM 101) before it was returned for engraving to R. Josey (Graves to JW, 26 November 1878, #01798). On 1 May 1879 JW sold Howell the copyright, and at that time the portrait was still being engraved (#02835). The engraving was probably published by the end of 1879.

4.  RICHARD JOSEY
Richard Josey (1840-1906), reproductive engraver [more].
