Dear Whistler

Your amiable little note[3] reaches me here or you would have received an earlier answer. I shall not be in England till the second week in Nov[em]ber[.] You see therefore, mon Président[4], how impossible it is to me [p. 2] to obey your wish as I should have liked; but indeed I am under all circumstances not of those who knock off things rapidly - I am a lumbering & laborious old fellow. - all my best sketches[5] have been exhibited in Suffolk Street[6] already -

Sincerely Yours

Fred Leighton

1.  6 October [1886]
Dated by reference to the Society of British Artists.

2.  Frederick Leighton
Frederic Leighton (1830-1896), painter and sculptor [more].

3.  little note
See a draft of JW's letter, #02512

4.  mon Président
JW was elected President of the SBA in July 1886.

5.  sketches
Presumably JW had used this word in his letter. 'Sketches' implied preliminary or unfinished works, and the emphasis on that word perhaps implied that Leighton kept his major 'finished' work for the Royal Academy.

6.  Suffolk Street
The galleries of the SBA.
