October 1st, 1890.
Dear Sir,
In view of the Meeting of the International Literary and Artistic Congress[2], to be held at the the Mansion House between the 4th and the 11th inst., the members of which body comprise many of the most distinguished names in Literature and Art throughout the Europe, I am desirous that these gentlemen, whose object in paying a visit to this country is to bring about the protection of International copyright, should be accorded a reception by their leading confrères on this side of the Channel worthy of the occasion.
May I ask if you will permit me to add your name to the Reception Committee under my Presidency?
I beg to enclose an invitation to the Dinner[3] on Monday next, October 6th, when these gentlemen honour me with their company, and to inform you that the Congress will hold its first sitting at the Mansion House, on Saturday next, October 4th, from 3 to 5, when I shall be glad if you can attend.
Yours truly,

Henry Aaron Isaacs (1830-1909), Lord Mayor of London [more].
2. International Literary and Artistic Congress
JW agreed to join the 'English reception committee' at the opening meeting on 4 October. This committee included such unlikely bed-fellows as George Augustus Sala (1828-1895), artist, journalist and critic [more], Edmund Hodgson Yates (1831-1894), novelist, 'Atlas' columnist and editor-proprietor of the World [more], James Thomas ('Frank') Harris (1856-1931), writer and playwright, editor of the Fortnightly Review and Saturday Review [more], Edmund William Gosse (1849-1928), writer and art critic [more], and John Henry Brodribb alias Henry Irving (1838-1905), actor, Director and manager of the Lyceum Theatre [more]. It is not known if JW attended the actual conference, although the subjects under dicussion, relating to questions of copyright, would have been of interest and relevance to him. The distinguished international conference included Antonin Proust (1832-1905), journalist, collector and politician [more], and probably Gustave Geffroy (1855-1926), journalist and writer [more]. See the Times, London, 6 October 1890, p. 4; 8 October 1890, p. 6; 11 October 1890, p. 7.
3. dinner
See #13548. JW attended the dinner and was one of several chosen to respond to the toast to Literature, Science, Art and the Drama' (Times, London, 7 October 1890, p. 7).
