'Sir Henry Irving[2]'

[embossed:] LYCEUM THEATRE.

9 Jany 1893

My dear Whistler

I am sorry to hear from Heinemann[3] that we have unwittingly infringed your Copyright regarding Philip[4] - It did not occur to me that as the picture had been purchased there were other rights than mine - Of course you understand that I should not willingly do anything which you did not wish in the matter and that I am much obliged for your permission of which Heinemann has told me. Are [p. 2] you really going to make your home in Paris - It seems a queer move does it not. I am sorry old friend I have not seen more of you of late but I hope that when you are next in London I may have the pleasure of seeing you some night at Supper in the Old Beefsteak[5] room -

Believe me
