I beg to acknowledge your reply[4] of the 19th. of January.
Pray present my compliments to the Gentlemen of the Committee. Express to them moreover my sense of surprise and regret at learning that, "in their opinion," the publicity not unnaturally attained by this matter has been "prejudicial to [p. 2] the interests of the Club."
Though the appearance of my letter in the "Independance Belge[5]" was, as I had the honor to inform them in my letter of the 14th. ultimo[6], without my knowledge or consent, I would respectfully remind the Gentlemen of the Committee that having made my report to them, as a member of the Club, I still reserved to myself, and should always, under all circumstances, reserve to myself the right of dealing further, as seemed to me best, in what concerns my own reputation before the world.
