WHITEHALL,
30 July 1887
Sir,
I AM DIRECTED BY THE SECRETARY OF STATE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE RECEIPT OF YOUR LETTER OF THE 29th Inst.[2] applying for permission to use the title "Royal" in connection with the name of the Society of British Artists; and I am to inform you, with reference to previous correspondence, that it would be contrary to usage for the Queen[3] to sanction the use of the name "Imperial" for a society having its operations wholly in the United Kingdom, but as it is desired to use the word "Royal" instead, Her Majesty's pleasure will be taken on the subject.
I am,
Sir,
Your obedient servant,
Godfrey Lushington
The President of the Society of British Artists
