Mr Whistler & the Paris Exhibition[4]
We see with surprise have been shown in your issue of Friday last a letter from Mr Spielman[5] [sic] under the above heading referring to the apology which Mr Whistler we, as Mr Whistler's lawyers[6] exacted from him. -
The draft apology was submitted to and modified by us to its present form, & as a completed matter agreed & inserted by Mr Mr Spielmans employers. - Had [p. 2] he submitted any such addendun [sic] as he has now made behind our Client's back it would have been rejected & the apology refused & we can only regard its appearance now as a surprising breach of faith. -

Marion Henry Alexander Spielmann (1858-1948), journalist and writer on art [more]. His article was 'An Artistic Causerie', Daily Chronicle, 6 October 1900. Speilmann implied that JW's medal had been awarded for work that was not in fact eligible (see JW's letter, #04416).
