Mr dear Sir -
Your New Venice Etchings[3]
I have purchased from the Dowdeswells[4] for one of my best amateurs a Set of your Etchings. This amateur holds some of your pictures[5] and a large number of your etchings. He is anxious to have good impressions from the plates. Would you kindly oblige both him and myself by selecting a set of the best impressions and writing his and your own name somewhere on them. Something like the following would do:- Selected for T. G. Arthur[6], Esquire. by J. McNeil [sic] Whistler.
If Mr. Arthur had not a strong feeling for your art I should not have troubled you thus. Hoping you may be willing to render us this service,
I am.
Yours truly
W C Angus.
The Messrs Dowdeswell would take care that I received the copy so inscribed.
