Pavillon Madeleine -
Pourville-sur-Mer -
* par Offranville[3] -

* Please notice[4] this change in postal address - Letters no longer go by Dieppe, & if so directed are days in arriving -

My dear Miss Bate -

I was so hurried this morning that this card which should have gone to you from the hotel, was still blank and in my pocket when I arrived here - and a dismally dingy card I perceive it to be, by the way! -

Here then is a later word for Mademoiselle la Massière, and for the private ear of the good Apprentice - There will "present themselves" two [p. 2] candidates - whom we will admit! - (submitting of course their drawings all the same) -

"Candidates" seems to me an excellent name - it had better be adopted - "Les Candidats" would be excellent, dont you think for all who propose themselves for entrance -

It would be well to put up a notice:
Candidates for admission will submit work for approval -

This might be by the door of the Ladies' Studio - upstairs - and in French - for the men - but for the present one will do for all -

To return then to the two specially recommended - One is young Daudet[5] - the son of Alphonse Daudet[6] - and the other is a Miss Prince[7] - a young lady from New York or rather I believe, Boston - whose people have it greatly at heart that she should be received[8] - for it has been well represented to them that this is a matter of rare difficulty & distinction - comme de juste[9]!
