Dated from signature, mourning border, and similar phraseology to another letter mentioning a trip to the Channel Islands, which is dated 9 October 1881 (JW to M. R. Elden, #12818).
JW spent some weeks in Jersey and Guernsey. He painted watercolours and oils including Blue Wave: Near the Casquet Rocks (YMSM 231) and Bleu et argent: La Mer, Jersey (YMSM 232a).
