Dear Paddon,
I have sent, as you proposed, a letter[4] (of which the enclosed is a copy) to Mr. Jack McNay[5]
Of course, directly I have his answer, we must all meet again, and rejoice, as becomes amiable lookers-on, at this amazing game!
Meanwhile, I need scarcely point out the advisability of keeping this letter quite to yourself.

It covers certain incidents relating to Charles Augustus ('Owl') Howell (1840? - d.1890), entrepreneur [more]. A Chinese 'pagoda' cabinet sold by JW to Sydney Morse (1854-1929), solicitor [more], became the subject of a protracted wrangle between JW, Morse and Howell (see S. Morse to T. F. Allingham, 16 September 1878, #00145). It later turned out that Howell, the agent in the sale, pawned the 'headpiece' of the cabinet whilst claiming it was in for repair. The complete cabinet is now at Leighton House Museum, London. The published correspondence starts with JW's letter of 10 March 1882 (#09519) with its enclosure, a letter from JW to J. E.
