Dear Paddon,

I have sent, as you proposed, a letter[4] (of which the enclosed is a copy) to Mr. Jack McNay[5]

Of course, directly I have his answer, we must all meet again, and rejoice, as becomes amiable lookers-on, at this amazing game!

Meanwhile, I need scarcely point out the advisability of keeping this letter quite to yourself.

Until then,
Sincerely yours,

J. McNeill Whistler.

13, Tite Street,

March 10th - Friday.

1.  10 March [1882]
Dated by almanac and sequence of letters; see JW's letter to John E. McNay, 9 March 1882, #08102.

2.  Samuel Wreford Paddon
Samuel Wreford Paddon (b. 1843), diamond merchant and collector [more].

3.  PLc
Published in Whistler, James McNeill, Correspondence. Paddon Papers. The Owl and the Cabinet, London, [1882], Letter I, p.1. It covers certain incidents relating to Charles Augustus ('Owl') Howell (1840? - d.1890), entrepreneur [more]. A Chinese 'pagoda' cabinet sold by JW to Sydney Morse (1854-1929), solicitor [more], became the subject of a protracted wrangle between JW, Morse and Howell (see S. Morse to T. F. Allingham, 16 September 1878, #00145). It later turned out that Howell, the agent in the sale, pawned the 'headpiece' of the cabinet whilst claiming it was in for repair. The complete cabinet is now at Leighton House Museum, London. The published correspondence starts with JW's letter of 10 March 1882 (#09519) with its enclosure, a letter from JW to J. E. McNay, 9 March 1882 (#08102); Letter II, Paddon to JW, 13 March 1882 (#04363 and #09520); Letter III, JW to Paddon, nd. [13/14 March 1882], (#04364); Letter IV, Paddon to JW, 16 March 1882 (#04365); Letter V, JW to Paddon, 23 March 1882 (#08103, #09523, #04366); Letter VI, Paddon to JW, 27 March 1882 (#04367); Letter VII, JW to Paddon, nd., [June/July 1882] (#04368); Letter VIII, Paddon to JW, 8 July 1882 (#09526); Letter IX, JW to Paddon, [9 July 1882?] (#09527, #04369); Letter X, J. E. McNay to JW, 15 March 1882 (#03738, #03739); Letter XI, F. Mewburn to JW, 18 March 1882 (#09529); Letter XII, Paddon to JW, 14 July 1882 (#09530); Letter XIII, JW to Paddon, [15 July 1882?] (#04370]; Letter XIV, T. Allingham to S. Morse, 18 September 1878 (#00149); Letter XV, S. Morse to C. A. Howell, 23 December 1878 (#04192); Letters XVI-XIX, T. Allingham to S. Morse, 19 and 21 February, 6 March, and 28 June 1879 (#00150, #09535 and #00151, #09536 and #00152, #09537 and #00153); Letter XX, S. Morse to C. A. Howell, 1 July 1879 (#04193); Letter XXI, S. Morse to JW, 10 June 1881 (#04194); Letter XXII, W. A. Chapman to JW, 9 June 1881 (#00591). Marginal annotations by JW commented on Letters VI, XII, XV, XVII, XVIII and XX. Proof copies of the pamphlet are in GUL (Whistler MS 202-205 A, B). JW sent copies of the pamphlet to friends and foes, but it does not seem to have been widely distributed.

4.  Jack McNay
John ('Jack') Edward MacNay (1834-1893), General Manager of the Stockton and Darlington Railway [more].

5.  letter
See JW to J. E. McNay, 9 March 1882, #08102. It relates to an incident recorded by JW in Whistler, James McNeill, Correspondence. Paddon Papers. The Owl and the Cabinet, London, [1882]. It concerned Charles Augustus ('Owl') Howell (1840? - d.1890), entrepreneur [more], and his rather ill-judged boast that he knew Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1882), Prime Minister of Great Britain [more].
