Attending you conferring on my interview with Messrs Walker & Co on the List[12] of [ove?] 7 pictures in 7 now sent to me by Messrs Walker & Co and you said the question was not that suggested by the letters of Messrs Walker as to the merits of your pictures but whether the criticism was a fair one expressed in reasonable terms. That as a fact the first three pictures on the List were sold, No. 1 was on your hands unsold, No. 5, Irving's Portrait was not priced and not for sale, No. 6 you had destroyed, and No. 7 entitled Nocturne in Black and Gold, and Arrangement in Brown, were in pledge at Mrs Noseda's, No. 2 belonged to Mr Graham, No. 3 to Mr Percy Wyndham, who had given Two hundred Guineas for it, No. 4 was given to Mrs Leyland, and you contended that the criticism } ---------

This relates to JW's libel suit against John Ruskin (1819-1900), critic, social reformer and artist [more]. The suit was in response to Ruskin's criticism of JW's works, especially Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket (YMSM 170), in his periodical Fors Clavigera. On 2 July 1877 he accused JW of 'flinging a pot of paint in the public's face' in a review of the I Summer Exhibition of the Grosvenor Gallery, London. See Ruskin, John, 'Letter the Seventy-ninth' Fors Clavigera, 2 July 1877, pp. 181-213. The trial took place at the Queen's Bench of the High Court on 25-26 November 1878.
