Dear Sir,
Mr Nightingales representative[3] called upon us today & handed us an Account[4] showing a net balance claimed by him of £635. 18. 10[.] he stated that the detailed Accounts had been handed to Mr Godwin[5] - he also stated that Mr. Nightingale was not disposed to grant any time for settlement - we think however if you can make him a substantial payment & get your acceptances backed by substantial persons you might get any reasonable time you require - We have an impression that it is a great point with him to have some cash down - You must please take this matter upon yourself as our Clients[6] do not feel justified in advancing any further sums on the property.

3. Mr Nightingales representative
An unidentified representative of Benjamin Ebenezer Nightingale (b. 1838), builder [more]. This relates to the White House, JW's studio house at Tite Street, then recently completed by Nightingale. JW moved into the White House in late July 1878 (see JW to S. Morse #10876, #10873). However, many of his accounts were still outstanding, including those of Nightingale and Edward William Godwin (1833-1886), architect and designer [more] of the house.
