Mon cher Deschamps -
Do all you can in this matter - n'est ce pas - I have not time to write more - and so send the enclosed - for Mrs. Mignot wants you to hear today before 2 - and her letter has only just come -
Ever sincerely yours
J. A. McN. Whistler
Dated by writing and context, JW's known contact with Deschamps, and the reference to Mrs Mignot (see below).

4. Mrs. Mignot
Mrs Mignot, widow of L. R. Mignot [more]. Her husband, Louis Rémy Mignot (1831-1870), painter [more], died in Brighton and she was left very badly off. This letter may refer to her attempts to settle his debts (see Portrait of a boy (M.542)).
