Notes:
1. [October 1878?]
Dated from JW's residence at the White House, but before he started using headed notepaper in November 1878.
2. [unknown]
It has been suggested that the recipient was Charles William Deschamps (1848-1908), art dealer [more], but the formality of the letter makes this unlikely.
3. International
This letter was probably written during the Universal Exhibition, Paris, 1878. The exhibition mentioned by JW is probably the Sydney International Exhibition of 1879. This was Australia's first international exhibition, a showcase of invention and industry from around the world. It is not thought that Whistler exhibited at the exhibition.
