June 23rd 1899.
Dear Mrs. Anderson.
Mr. Whistler says of course you can do "everything in the matter". He is surprised that it has not been done & says that you evidently have misunderstood the whole affair.
The enclosed I return & Mr. Whistler says that you are to see Mr. Pawling[4] again about it. You [p. 2] are to say that the work that was done by them Webster[5] was never submitted first for approval & that the engraving of the butterfly was quite different to the specimen drawing given to them. Therefore as the paper was useless Mr. Whistler does not think it right that he should pay.
Yours truly -
R. Birnie Philip.
