Watts - My dear fellow -
how did you escape me this afternoon? I turned up at the beautiful American's[4] just after you had gone!

Notes:
1. [July 1876/July 1878]
Lindsey Row was renamed and renumbered so JW's house became 96 Cheyne Walk, and there are letters written as from that address from about July 1876 to July 1878, when JW moved to the White House. There does not seem to be any basis for the date written at the top of the letter, in an unknown hand.
2. Walter Theodore Watts-Dunton
Walter Theodore Watts (later Watts-Dunton) (1832-1914), solicitor, novelist and poet [more].
