My dear Mrs Cowan -

I knew that of course if I had not heard from you both it was because you had not learned what I could not tell you^[3] -

I cannot write yet - but I want you to know how greatly touched I was by the warm friendship of your [p. 2] husbands letters^[4] - I shall always like him -

You who have known us in our home - long long ago it seems - can remember and imagine much - without my saying it now! -

Perhaps later on I may come up and see you in Scotland - if I may - At present I am troubled with many things - and will I believe have to go over to France almost immediately -

However I shall try and call upon you on Friday morning at about 11. o'clock - or half past ten -

Letters written by John James Cowan (1846-1936), paper manufacturer and collector [more], to JW during Beatrix Whistler's illness. While none have been traced, they are referred to in JW's replies to Cowan (see #00708, #00709, #00713).
