My dear Mr Whistler,
It was Mr Ernest Brown[2] of The Fine Art Society who asked me about two years ago if I thought I could sell a portrait by Mr. Swan[3]. I said I did not think so, but went with him to see it. It was shown to me privately in one of the rooms upstairs, and having seen it before in an unfinish[ed] [p. 2] state in the Artist's Studio I recognized it as being the portrait of Sir William Eden's daughter[4]. Mr Brown then told me that Sir William Eden[5] was not pleased with it; had given the artist £450 for it, and was willing to part with it for much less.
I am sorry I did not get the two French newspapers, you kindly sent me. Something about the Verdict[6]? Well, I think it is quite absurd, and I am sorry for [p. 3] you.
The two lithographs[7] you wished me to mount and frame are quite ready. Do you wish me to send them anywhere?
With kindest regards,
yours sincerely
E. J. van Wisselingh
P S. Although your letter is dated 27th I have only received it this morning. Just back from Holland
