E. J. VAN WISSELINGH
BUITENHOF NO. 48
DEN HAAG.

3rd April 1889

J. McN. Whistler Esq
London

Dear Sir,

Some time ago I had the pleasure of buying a picture of yours from Messrs Dowdeswell[2] called "Effie Deans"[3][.] I liked it very much and no doubt my liking it so much helped me in the sale of it. My client, Baron van Lynden[4] is delighted with his [p. 2] purchase and the picture has grown on him as I knew it would, as one has only to live with a work of this kind to become attached to it.

Now I take the liberty of asking you to be kind enough to let me know about what time this picture was painted by you as Baron van Lynden who is actually at Nice, met with a friend of yours, to whom [p. 3] this picture is unknown and he should like to be able to tell this gentleman when you painted it as the picture is neither signed nor dated.

Thanking you before hand for thus troubling you,

I remain
Dear Sir,
Yours faithfully

E. J. van Wisselingh[5]
