The Solicitor[3] to the Metropolitan Board[4] [w]rites us, under the date of the 11th [Inst?] - that "the Boards Architect[5] is unable at present to certify to the Board that the Conditions upon which the lease[6] can be granted - have been complied with"

Mr Nightingale[7] has forwarded us another certificate by [you?] for £300 - which we must ask Mr Whistler to meet

Edward William Godwin (1833-1886), architect and designer [more]. Godwin was the architect of JW's studio house at Tite Street, the White House, then in the process of construction.

The London Metropolitan Board of Works was a municipal body responsible for major schemes of public works. It also had a planning role in the development of new public thoroughfares.

The Metropolitan Board objected to the austere facade designed by Godwin. The Board withheld the lease on the property until JW and Godwin devised some additional decorative details.
