Dear Sir
The petition[2] is going on well and I expect to get all the painters here to support it in fact the majority have done so already.
It has occurred to me that besides having it signed by Glasgow men it would be desirable to have two signatures from London & two from Edinburgh[;] this would not only carry weight but [p. 2] would complete the petition - The names I think of from London are Orchardson[3] & Gilbert[4] from Edinburgh MacTaggart[5] and another I have not finally fixed on - I would be glad to know if you think this a good plan - appealing to you on this matter may seem strange but I should be glad of your advice which I would hold strictly in confidence -
Yours most faithfully
E. A. Walton
[p. 3] P. S.
Since writin beginning this letter I have seen our mutual friend Mr Robert Walker[6] and he being anxious to support the scheme suggests that he will add to the petition a page for the signatures of laymen - this is now being done which will help very much
