My dear Underdown -
Archie[3] tells me that you have consented to take the chair, on the occasion of the dinner[4], at which I am to hold the unwonted position of guest of the evening. -
This is most charming of you! - I am much touched by such proof of sympathy, and greatly flattered by the willingness of [p. 2] one so distinguished, to preside at this curious demonstration in approval of one so unaccustomed to it.

A dinner, to congratulate JW on being made an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Munich, was held at the Criterion in Piccadilly on 1 May 1889. Archibald Stuart-Wortley wrote to W. C. Symons on 21 March (#07133) to say that Underdown had agreed to take the chair.
