How very very nice in you My dear Böehm! - and what can I say? - There is nothing I am afraid that I have at all worth twenty guineas - but do come round and choose what you may think sympathetic in the studio - and afterwards we will paint the portrait[3] if not too wearisome for you to sit - Meanwhile always and with [p. 2] thanks that do not at all tell you how much I am touched
Yours affectionately

[p. 3] 'To Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm R A, sculptor[4]'

Notes:
1. [20/25 October 1878]
This is a reply to Boehm's letter of 19 October 1878, offering much-needed money and suggesting in due course JW could sell him something in return (#00319).
2. Joseph Edgar Boehm
Joseph Edgar Boehm (1834-1890), sculptor [more].
3. portrait
This appears to be the sole reference to a portrait of Boehm. It is not clear if this had been started and it does not seem to have been completed. Boehm did acquire some work by JW, which has not been identified (see #00326) and, later, a superb pastel, The Giudecca; note in flesh colour (M.817).
4. To Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm RA, sculptor
Written in an unknown hand.
