PALL MALL GAZETTE
NORTHUMBERLAND STREET,
STRAND.
Dear Mr Whistler,
Although The honeymoon[2] is a bourne from which the traveller returns I am not sure whether you are back amongst us again. But as I am going for a holiday I think I had better return my very best thanks to you for the delightful souvenir of that eventful Saturday morning which you sent me. I shall always preserve it with my most valued treasures, and if I am [very?] ever led to [p. 2] the altar, and am in due time blessed, or otherwise, with offspring, the baker's shop shall be handed on. I wonder if you would scribble on a bit of paper a line marking the occasion -
By the way, wd you look at "Ouida[3]", & having digested her would you write us a short critique upon the "ugliness" of London.
Believe me,
Yours very truly,
Charles Morley.

Notes:
1. Charles Morley
Charles Morley (1853-1916), journalist at the Pall Mall Gazette [more].
2. honeymoon
JW married Beatrix Whistler (1857-1896), née Beatrice Philip, artist [more] on 11 August 1888. A working honeymoon was spent travelling in France - the Loire, Eure, Paris and Chartres. Morley reported on the wedding for the Pall Mall Gazette (Anon., 'The Marriage of Mr. Whistler and Mrs. Godwin,' The Pall Mall Gazette, 11 August 1888).
3. Ouida
'Ouida', née Louise de la Ramée (1839-1908), novelist [more]. JW did not comply with Stead's request for an 'short critique.' Ouida and JW shared a London publisher, Chatto & Windus. JW had recently published Whistler, James McNeill, Mr. Whistler's 'Ten O'clock', London, 1888 while Ouida had published three volumes with the firm in 1888: Held in Bondage; or, Granville de Vigne a Tale of the Day; Under Two Flags: a Novel; and Pascarel; Only a Story.
