My dear Sir
I take a very bold step, but I hope you will think me excusable.
I have taken in hand to raise 400 guineas by the sale of an album of sketches[2] - & I fear that I won't succeed unless I get a few very important names - Will the Master deign to give me a few [p. 2] strokes from his magic pencil & then I will be safe?
I take the liberty of sending you by same post, a booklet - newly published - the joint production of my son[3] & myself. It takes only one hour to read & tho' the Scotch may puzzle you, even tho' you be a McNeill, I hope it will amuse you, sometime [p. 3] perhaps when travelling.
Should you not see your way to grant my request, you will not I can assure you make another "enemy".

IT HAS BEEN DECIDED TO FORM AN ALBUM OF WATER COLOUR AND BLACK & WHITE SKETCHES IN AID OF THE SCHEME FOR THE ENDOWMENT OF QUEEN MARGARET COLLEGE.
THE COMMITTEE WILL ESTEEM IT A VERY GREAT FAVOUR IF YOU WILL CONTRIBUTE A SKETCH, AND LET ME KNOW AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE, THAT I MAY ADD YOUR NAME TO THE LIST OF THOSE WHO HAVE ALREADY PROMISED THEIR HELP.
THE MAXIMUM SIZE OF DRAWINGS IS 7" x 5"; AND THE MEDIUM, WATERCOLOUR, BLACK AND WHITE WASH, OR PEN AND INK.
THE DRAWINGS SHOULD REACH ME NOT LATER THAN 15TH JULY.

Mann may possibly have been hoping to raise money for the recently founded women's medical school, part of Queen Margaret College, a women's college which became part of the University of Glasgow in 1895 (Begg, T., The Excellent Women: the Origins and History of Queen Margaret College, Edinburgh 1994).
