Paris,

26 Avril

Cher ami,

Translation:

Dear Friend,

You remember that this winter on your return from London I spoke to you, on behalf of myself and of common friends, of the sale that I am going to hold, for the benefit of a very talented and ailing artist, Mr Lauzé. I told you that Monet, Degas, [and] Puvis de Chavannes had each donated [p. 2] one of their works and that Mrs Jacquemin, who collects these donations in person, fervently wished for your name to figure amongst the illustrious ones.

She asks me once again for a word of introduction to which I join my own wish, that you participate in this poignant and charitable act which concerns us all.

Yours,

Stéphane Mallarmé
