AGENCE STÉNOGRAPHIQUE DES TRIBUNAUX
PARIS, 15, RUE D'ARCOLE
PRÈS LE PALAIS DE JUSTICE
le 3 Décembre 1897
Monsieur Whistler
110, rue du Bac
Paris
Monsieur,

Translation:
Dear Sir,
In response to your lawyer Mr Bazille's request for an additional copy of the Summing-up for the counsel for the prosecution, I have supplied him with one free of charge.
I also sent to Mr Bazille's study, in accordance with the conversation I had with him, three copies of the Judgement. I will have my small Bill, for the sum of 10 Francs, sent to you in relation to this.
I am convinced, Sir, that eventually to complete your file on this case, you will want to ask me for the stenography of Mr Bureau's pleading, for which I would only ask 30 Francs from you, in respect of our good relationship.
Please be so kind as to send me a note in response to this subject and accept, Sir, my attentive compliments,

Notes:
1. Victor Bluet
Victor Bluet (fl. 1887-1901), judicial stenographer at the Cour d'Appel, Paris [more].
2. M. Bazille
Maitre Bazille, lawyer, Cour d'Appel, Paris. This relates to JW's dispute with Sir William Eden (1849-1915), painter and collector [more], over Brown and Gold: Portrait of Lady Eden (YMSM 408), a portrait of Eden's wife. On 14 February 1894, with the picture seemingly nearing completion, Eden sent JW a cheque for 100 guineas (#02687). But JW was dissatisfied with his work and refused to hand it over to Eden, believing it was the artist's right to withhold a picture in such circumstances. When Eden instituted legal proceedings against him in November 1894 in order to retrieve it, JW returned all monies that had been paid to him. However, the dispute dragged on until December 1897 when JW, on appeal, was permitted by the Cour de Cassation in Paris to keep the picture provided that he did not make use of it. In 1899, JW published his account of the affair in Whistler, James McNeill, Eden versus Whistler: The Baronet and the Butterfly. A Valentine with a Verdict, Paris and New York, 1899 [GM, A.24].
3. M. l'Avocat Général
Lé Bulot (1850-1922), barrister, Advocate general[more].
