THIS AGREEMENT entered into this 29th[2] day of May,[3] 1890 BETWEEN J. McNeill Whistler of 21 Cheyne Walk, London, England of the first part, and John W. Lovell of New York in the United States of America of the second part


IN consideration of the premises and of one pound in hand paid, receipt of which is hereby acknowledged, J. McNeill Whistler, the party of the first part hereby transfers to the said John W. Lovell, the party of the second part, the sole right to publish vend and sell in the United States and the Dominion of Canada a work by him entitled "THE GENTLE ART OF MAKING ENEMIES[4]", and the said John W. Lovell hereby agrees to pay the said J. McNeill Whistler a royalty at the rate of ten per cent upon the retail price of all copies sold in all editions other than the edition de luxe limited to 100 copies for America, and upon that edition he agrees to pay the said J. McNeill Whistler the sum of $2.50 on each copy actually sold.

Semi-Annual statements of accounts shall be made on March 15. and August 15. and settlements made in cash.

(p. 2) THE said J. McNeill Whistler guarantees that the said work "THE GENTLE ART OF MAKING ENEMIES" is an original work and that he will hold harmless and defend the said John W. Lovell from all actions for libel or other actions growing out of the publication of the said work.
