Report of the first Council Meeting held at Princes Rink

Dec 23rd 1897

Those present were:-
Mr John Lavery[2] who occupied the Chair
Mr E A Walton[3]
Mr G Sauter[4]
Mr Francis Howard

Telegrams & letters were received from Mr Whistler[,] Mr Gilbert[5], and other members of the council explaining their unavoidable absence in consequence of the season and the short notice given of the meeting

The following resolutions were passed:-

(1) It was resolved on behalf of the entire Council to give the company of the Imternational [sic] Exhibition and its directors every support and active help in the formation and artistic conduct of the Exhibition and its director to a successful issue.

(2) It was resolved to issue as soon as possible formal invitations of Honarary [sic] Membership of the Council to the following distinguished Artists[6] abroad (the form of invitation, and its issue in French & German being entrusted to the Honorary Secretary after some discussion upon the point)

M. M Puvis de Chavannes, Rodin, Besnard, Boldini, Menzel Stück, Helleu, Degas, Zorn, Von Lembach, Klinger, Von Uhdi [sic][,] Bachlin [sic], Liebermann - Blanche - G. Costa, Meunier, Aman Jean, Carrière, Thaulow, Alexander[,] J. Mariaiz. [sic], Pradilla, Sagantini [sic], Mesdag, Fragiacomo [sic], Dill, Moreau, Klimt, Macmonniss [sic], Fantin, Latour,

[p. 2] (3) It was resolved to empower the Honarary Secretary to give notice of another Council Meeting at a convenient time (to be determined by the progress of the business arrangements of the Company) to consider -

The dates of receiving, judging & hanging of works. -

The form and issue of general & special invitations of works. -

The question of the compilation of the Catalogue

The forms of announcement & advertisement of the Exhibition,
