My dear Mr. Whistler,
You know the trouble I have been in. You know that I have had to go to Germany to bury poor Balestier[2], - a horrible, sad, and trying errand. But I came back on Monday, and have already seen Appleton's[3] man.
We can now immediately arrange the whole business if it suits you and, if you like, publish the first part quite early in the New Year. I am going to Brighton to-day to get a little fresh air, and shall be back on Tuesday. Please let me know when I can see you and bring Mr. Sheldon[4] with me, (if possible, out of business hours, because you are anyhow burning gas all day), or will you do still better? - will you come up here for breakfast on Wednesday? That would be perfect, and everything could be straight away fixed up.
But I shall have to come down soon, to see what Mrs. Whistler[5] has done. I am most anxious about this, and if what she has done since is nearly as nice as what I saw last, the book[6] will be one of the loveliest things we have ever seen. Please give her my kindest regards, and also Miss Phillips[7] [sic].
