2nd March 1891

Dear Sir,

The Committee of the Town Council of Glasgow for this institution have had under consideration a memorial[4] which has been presented to them regarding your portrait of Carlyle[5]. I am instructed to inform you that the Chairman of the Committee (Councillor Robert Crawford[6]) accompanied by one or two other members of the Town Council would be glad to [p. 2] have an interview with you on the subject. They expect to be in London within a week; and if you would be ready to receive them, more specific notice of the time at which they may be able to wait on you will be sent.
