Notes:

1.  [6 December 1877/18 November 1878]
Two of these documents are dated and it is not clear if the notes are of the same date. All relate to the case of Whistler v. Ruskin, heard at the Queen's Bench of the High Court on 25-26 November 1878.

2.  James Anderson Rose
James Anderson Rose (1819-1890), solicitor [more].

3.  73
Written in another hand, in a circle. Documents kept by Rose were numbered according to the case or part of a case.

4.  Ruskin
John Ruskin (1819-1900), critic, social reformer and artist [more].

5.  Mr Serjeant Parry
John Humffrey Parry (1816-1880), Sergeant-at-law [more].

6.  55
Written in another hand.

7.  Mr McCreary
Probably Lawson James McCreary, clerk to the solicitor, J. A. Rose [more].

8.  Walker Martineau & Co
Lawyers for John Ruskin.

9.  [p. 3]
These notes are largely illegible and incomprehensible.

10.  Boehm
Joseph Edgar Boehm (1834-1890), sculptor [more].

11.  Albert Moore
Albert Joseph Moore (1841-1893), painter [more]. Moore, William Michael Rossetti (1829-1919), civil servant and critic [more], and William Gorman Wills (1828-1891), playwright and painter [more], appeared as witnesses for JW. See Merrill, Linda, A Pot of Paint: Aesthetics on Trial in 'Whistler v. Ruskin', Washington and London, 1992, pp. 141-45 for JW's testimony, pp. 158-59 for that of Moore. None of the others mentioned on this page were called as witnesses.

12.  74
Written in another hand, in a circle.

13.  Matthew Elden
Matthew Robinson Elden (1839-1885), artist [more]. His name and address were added by JW.

14.  Algernon Graves
Algernon Graves (1845-1922), of H. Graves and Co., print dealers [more].

15.  Buggianni
Brazio Buggiani (b. ca 1818), picture restorer [more]. According to a letter from JW to Mrs Rawlinson (#08112), he was employed to varnish Nocturne: Blue and Silver - Battersea Reach (YMSM 119). See also #11895.

16.  Charles Augustus Howell
Charles Augustus ('Owl') Howell (1840? - d.1890), entrepreneur [more].

17.  William [Nes]field
William Eden Nesfield (1835-1888), architect and designer [more].

18.  Whistler
This page probably records legal expenses incurred by JW.

19.  224
Written in another hand, in a circle.

20.  95
Written in another hand, in a circle.

21.  Graham's
JW exhibited seven oils at the 1st Summer Exhibition, Grosvenor Gallery, London, 1877 (cat. nos. 5, 6A, 6, 4, 8, 9 and one ex. cat). These were Nocturne in Blue and Silver (YMSM 113), Nocturne: Blue and Gold - Old Battersea Bridge (YMSM 140) as 'Nocturne in Blue and Silver', Nocturne: Grey and Gold - Westminster Bridge (YMSM 145), Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket (YMSM 170), Arrangement in Black and Brown: The Fur Jacket (YMSM 181) as 'Harmony in Amber and Black', Arrangement in Brown (YMSM 182) and Arrangement in Black, No. 3: Sir Henry Irving as Philip II of Spain (YMSM 187). Arrangement in Grey and Black, No. 2: Portrait of Thomas Carlyle (YMSM 137), was exhibited in the entrance gallery (ex. cat.). The owners were William Graham (1817-1885), MP and collector [more], Frances Leyland (1836-1910), née Dawson [more], Madeline Caroline Frances Eden Wyndham (1835-1920), née Campbell, artist [more] and Mrs Jane Noseda (b. 1813 or 1814), print dealer [more]. When constructing their case, JW, or his lawyer, apparently wanted to suggest that any unsold paintings were not actually for sale. However, the portrait of Carlyle, for instance, while not for sale technically, since it was on deposit with Graves as surety for a loan, was certainly for sale.

22.  106
Written in another hand.
