This preliminary list of JW's debts predates the official list dated 7 May 1879, when JW filed for bankruptcy (#11711) and the settlement, agreed before Judge Hazlitt in the London Bankruptcy Court, on 9 May 1879 (#08903). Confirmation of the final settlements are dated 3 September 1880 (#08900).
2. James Anderson Rose
James Anderson Rose (1819-1890), solicitor [more]. As JW's lawyer, he retained all legal documents including those relating to JW's bankruptcy, and these were later acquired by E. R. and J. Pennell and passed to the Library of Congress.
3. North Metropolitan
Mortgage agreements between JW and the North Metropolitan Permanent Benefit Building Society were dated 8 June and 6 November 1878 (#08882, #11896). Subsequently H. K. Cone requested payment on 18 March 1879 (#08883).
4. Nightingale
Benjamin Ebenezer Nightingale (b. 1838), builder [more]. His original agreement for building the White House for JW is dated 5 November 1877, and their contract, 6 November 1877 (#08923, #08927). He sued JW for payment on 25 November 1877 (#12031; see also #12028, #12034, #12013). Litigation involved still further expenses: see, for instance, W. Webb's accounts from 7 December 1877 to 13 June 1878 (#08928).

6. Halling Pearce & Stone
The firm were silk mercers and haberdashers, selling hosiery, gloves and costumes. They requested payment of this debt on 26 September 1878 (#08854). A writ from Linnley and Linnley, on behalf of Halling, Pearce and Stone, was forwarded by T. Allingham to Rose on 15 January 1879 (#12085).
7. Lazenby Liberty & Co
Arthur Lasenby Liberty (1843-1917), designer, founder of Liberty and Co. [more], was slow to take action against JW for non-payment of debts (see #02611, #02612, #02613, #08740, #08946). Statements of Liberty's accounts were dated November and 25 December 1878 (#08946, #08962).
8. Clarke. J.
James Clarke, milliner and costume maker [more]. This amount corresponds to their bill (#08844).
9. Hamper . W & H.
The firm sold shirts, hosiery and gloves. JW's account with them at Michaelmas 1878 was mentioned in their letter to T. Allingham dated 14 October 1878 (#11888).
10. Hedderly. J.
James Hedderly (ca 1815 - d.1885), photographer [more]. See his letter and request for payment (#08960, #08783).
11. Luff
Thomas Luff (b. ca 1839), of Luff and Co., Chelsea wine merchant [more]. JW was a regular customer at Luff's wine shop at 221 and 229 Kings Road, Chelsea. See their accounts, dated 21 and 23 August 1878, and sent to T. Allingham on 10 0ctober 1878 (#11940, #08734, #08965).
12. Morrison M
A debt to 'Morrison' was mentioned by JW in one letter to Rose (#08776). It is possible that this was not 'Morrison M' but Hargrave Morrison (b. 1817), oil and colour merchant [more]. Hargrave Morrison, a near neighbour of JW, wrote to him on 17 September 1878 requesting immediate payment of an unspecified amount (#08742), and his lawyer, Edmund Newman, wrote to Rose regarding the debt on 28 March 1879 (#11912). The sum in the column to right is written in another hand.
13. Morse S
Sydney Morse (1854-1929), solicitor [more]. Morse succeded JW as tenant of 96 Cheyne Walk.
14. Parsons
John Robert Parsons (ca 1826 - d.1909), painter, photographer, and art dealer [more], who wrote to T. Allingham on 23 September 1878 and 4 March 1879 regarding JW's debt (#12080, #12081).
15. Rowe F
Frederick Rowe (b. ca 1831), baker and confectioner [more], whose long-running account was dated 7 September 1878 (#08862, #08856).
16. Thiery
Nicholas Thierry, shoe and boot maker [more]. This corresponds to his account, dated 16 August 1878 (#08732).
17. Winsor & Newton
The famous, and still extant, suppliers of artists' materials. JW's debt is recorded in a letter from Roger Cartwright to JW, dated 21 August 1878 (#08733).
18. Charles Jno. S.
John S. Charles (fl. 1876-1887), fishmonger in Pimlico, London [more]. The unpaid fish bills ran from 31 July 1876 to 10 January 1879 (#08848, #08849).
19. Williams C.
C. Williams, milkman, Chelsea [more]. JW and his household consumed a lot of milk and cream between September 1878 and January 1879 (#08845, #08846).
20. Gas Company
The London Gaslight Company sent JW their account on 28 December 1878 (#08852).
21. Alfred Wigan
Albert Wigan, coal merchant, of the Great Northern Coal Owners' Company [more]. The coal bill was dated 28 January 1879 (#08942).
22. Lechertier Barbe & Co
This corresponds to the account dated 31 March 1879, from the firm of artists' colourmen at 60 Regent Street (#08938).
23. G. Fletcher
G. Fletcher, Chelsea coal merchant [more]. This corresponds to Fletcher's bill of 30 October 1878 (#08950).
24. Ford & Dickenson
This corresponds to Foord and Dickinson's bill (#08944).
25. Hogarth & Sons
This corresponds to Hogarth's bill of 15 December 1877 (#08947).
26. Webb G & W
The legal costs of mortgages and similar matters are reflected in Webb's account between 7 December 1877 and 13 June 1878 (#08928).
27. Terry G.
George Terrey (b. ca 1821), fruiterer and greengrocer in Chelsea [more]. He lived at 45 Cheyne Walk, and so was a near neighbour of JW.
28. Tacchi
George Tacchi (b. ca 1841), painter and picture frame maker [more]. His case against JW for non-payment of debts, was heard on 3 December 1878 (#12041)
29. Kent Thos
Thomas Kent, milkman in Chelsea. JW's debt is not recorded, and it does not appear in the final bankruptcy proceedings, so it may have been settled out of court.
30. Hewett & Co
Richard Wright represented Hewett and Co., importers of Chinese and Japanese goods (24 February 1879, #08893).
31. Duffield
Joseph William Duffield (b. 1842 or 1843), builder and house agent [more]. Richard Wright represented Duffield in his claim for payment 'for work and labour' (26 February 1879, #08860).
32. Jas MacMichael
James Macmichael (b. ca 1824), stationer and engraver in the King's Road, Chelsea [more]. His bill for printing new cards for JW was dated 28 September 1878 (#08953).
33. Lincoln Bennett
A request for payment of their account was dated 4 October 1878 (#08963).
34. Hermann
Louis Herrman (b. 1810 or 1811), of Gilby and Herrman, artists' suppliers, later a picture dealer [more]. JW had complicated monetary dealings with Hermann.
35. Low
R. and J. E. Low, surveyors, sent JW a bill for £6. 9. 0 on 20 December 1878 (#08932).

Edward Harland Tupholme (b. ca 1839), chemist and druggist [more]. This corresponds to a bill dated 21 June 1878 (#08943).

A firm of solicitors.
43. Howell
Charles Augustus ('Owl') Howell (1840? - d.1890), entrepreneur [more]. His financial involvement with JW was tangled beyond belief.

Thomas De Kay Winans (1820-1878), locomotive engineer and collector [more].
46. Walter S. Winans
Walter Scott Winans (1840-1928), civil engineer [more].
47. Underwood Pritchard
This represents a bill dated 7 December 1878 (#08956), for an item purchased by 'Mrs Whistler', presumably meaning Anna Matilda Whistler (1804-1881), née McNeill, JW's mother [more]. She was then living at Hastings.
48. Allingham
Theodore Frederick Allingham (b. 1845), solicitor [more].
49. Ladenbourg
S. Ladenburgh of Mayence (Mainz) had sent JW a bill for fine wines on 10 March 1866, and repeated their request for payment on 9 October 1876 (#08939, #08934).

Ironmongers in the Fulham Road, Chelsea. JW's debt is not recorded, and it does not appear in the final bankruptcy proceedings, so it may have been settled out of court.

John Craft (d. ca 1878), cheesemonger in Knightsbridge [more]. Edmund Newman represented Craft against JW (see letters dated 21 January 1878, #12186, #08981).
54. The London Stereoscopic
There is no record of this debt, although JW did sit to them for a photograph that was unsatisfactory, according to their letter of 28 December 1878 (#08858). He probably had further sittings at that time, for a successful half-plate photograph, of which there are examples in Glasgow University Library.
55. Satchell
Satchell & Son - Satchell and Son were hatters in Liverpool, and were among JW's creditors at the time of his bankruptcy (see #08857).
56. Lacon & Ollier
Lacon and Ollier were opera and theatrical agents. This corresponds to their bill of 19 October [1878] (#08935).
57. Farmer & Rogers
They sold oriental goods and materials. This corresponds to their bill of 25 December 1878 (#08952).
58. Lombard Deposit Bank Ld

59. Leyland
Frederick Richards Leyland (1832-1892), ship-owner and art collector [more]. He was a major creditor, having commissioned, but not received, several paintings, including portraits of his family.
60. Dick Radclyffe
Seed merchant, glass house and conservatory builder, and decorator. This corresponds to his bill of 22 January 1879 (#08941).
61. Wm Whistler
William McNeill Whistler (1836-1900), physician, JW's brother [more]. His financial situation was nearly as precarious as JW's, and is reflected in numerous letters to Rose, which like JW's bankruptcy papers, are now in the Library of Congress.
