Identity:

Alexander Williams was a landscape and marine painter and the first Honorary Secretary of the Dublin Sketching Club.

Life:

Williams studied at the Art Schools of the Royal Dublin Society and he exhibited in Ireland, London and in several parts of Europe. One of his most famous works was the forty-eight illustrations he created for Beautiful Ireland by Stephen Gwynt. His connection with JW began on 18 December 1884, when he sent a letter to the artist informing him that at a recent meeting of the Dublin Sketching Club, he was elected an honorary member. JW had sent twenty-five works for their Annual Exhibition of Sketches, Pictures and Photography. In a later correspondence with W.B. Pearsall, JW commented that he was writing a reply to express his pleasure at the nomination.
