Identity:

Richard Whiteing was a journalist and novelist, who was in contact with JW in the 1880s. He married Helen Harris.

Life:

Whiteing began his career as a pupil of Benjamin Wyon, medallist and Chief Engraver to Her Majesty's Seals. He later turned to journalism and became a contributor to the Evening Star in 1866. Subsequently he became a leader writer on the Morning Star and a staff journalist on the Manchester Guardian. He also worked as the Guardian's Paris correspondent and for the London World. A stint at the New York World was followed by a return to London and the final post of his career as correspondent for the Daily News. His published works include The Democracy (1876), The Island (1888) and The Life of Paris (1900).
