Identity:

Lady Adeline Gertrude Denison Milner, née Beckett, was the daughter of William Beckett (1826-1890), M.P., later Baron Grimthorpe, and Helen, the daughter of the second Baron Feversham. She had three brothers, Ernest William (b. 1856), William Gervase (b. 1866) and Rupert Evelyn (b. 1870), and two sisters, Helen Louisa and Maud Augusta (Lady Henry Nevill). In 1880 she married Sir Frederick George Milner, M.P., who was the seventh Baronet.

Life:

Sir Milner was the Conservative M.P. for York from 1883 to 1885 and for Bassetlaw from 1890 to 1906. He was Justice of the Peace for West Riding. The Milners' London addresses included Old Ferry House, 5 Chelsea Embankment in the 1880s and 22 Pont Street in the 1890s.

JW was friendly with the Milners and invited them to his Ten O'Clock Lecture on 20 February 1885 at the Prince's Hall, Picadilly, but they were unable to attend [#04079].
