Identity:
G. Grenville Manton was a portrait painter and illustrator. The name appears in JW's correspondence as J. Grenville Manton, but that appears to be incorrect.
Life:
Manton, a medallist at the Royal Academy, was educated in London and Paris. He went to the USA in 1890 and exhibited at the National Academy there. On his return he became staff artist on Black & White. He exhibited at Birmingham, Liverpool Art Exhibition, Royal Society of Portrait Painters, Royal Academy and Royal Institute of Oil Painters. He illustrated True to the Core (Jarrold's Books for Manly Boys, 1894) and also submitted illustrations to The Quiver, Pearson's Magazine, The Ludgate Monthly, The Pall Mall Magazine and The Sphere. He was a member of the Society of Illustrators which invited Whistler to become its Vice-President in 1894. In 1899 he was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists. He lived at Bushey, Hertfordshire from 1895 until his death.
