James Macculloch was a landscape and watercolour painter.

Life:

Macculloch, who painted primarily Highland subjects, e.g. Loch Alsh from the Isle of Skye, was an active exhibitor between 1872 and 1893, particularly at the Society of British Artists, a society which elected JW its President in 1886. Macculloch also exhibited at Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Grosvenor Gallery, Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Water Colours, Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and Manchester City Art Gallery. He was elected a member of the Society of British Artists in 1884, becoming a council member in 1887. In 1885 he joined the membership of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Water Colours.

Macculloch was among those who attended a dinner organised by W. C. Symons to congratulate JW on being made an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Munich, a dinner which was to be held at the Criterion in Piccadilly on 1 May 1889 (#03698).
