W. Mouat Loudan was a portrait and genre painter.

Life:

Loudan studied at the Royal Academy Schools, where he won a gold medal and travelling studentship. He also studied in Paris under William-Adolph Bouguereau. He exhibited in London from 1883 at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Society of Portrait Painters, Grosvenor Gallery, New Gallery, Society of British Artists (a society which elected JW its President in 1886), New English Art Club, Beaux-Arts Gallery, Baillie Gallery and International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers (a society of which JW became the founding President in 1898). He also exhibited at the Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham, Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and Manchester City Art Gallery. In 1886 he joined the New English Art Club, two years before JW exhibited with the group. He was elected a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in 1891.

Loudan was amongst those proposed invitees to a dinner organised by W. C. Symons to congratulate JW on being made an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Munich, a dinner which was to be held at the Criterion in Piccadilly on 1 May 1889 (#05635).
