Identity:
Gertrude Stanton Käsebier was a photographer, known for her portraits and studies of mothers and children.
Life:
She began her career as a painter but turned to photography in c. 1894 and worked for magazines. In c. 1898 she opened a studio in New York that was soon frequented by artistic luminaries as Auguste Rodin and Stanford White. In 1902 she was a founder member of the Photo-Secession and she remained a regular exhibitor until 1910. Käsebier is mentioned in JW's correspondence in August 1902 (#04012) when she made a photographic portrait of the collector Howard Mansfield looking at JW's etching Riault, the Engraver (K.65).
